The Second Minnesota, commanded by Horatio van Cleve, participated in William Tecumseh Sherman's March to the Sea in fall 1864. The regiment is also remembered for a heroic charge during the Battle of Missionary Ridge, in Tennessee in 1863. This battle flag, which belonged to the Second, shows evidence of souvenir-hunters, who would have cut out pieces of the flag as a remembrance.
