The Appeal was a weekly African American newspaper started in St. Paul in 1885. From 1888 until 1922, John Q. Adams was editor, author, and sole proprietor. He often wrote strong editorials supporting African American rights and included news and advertisements about local black-owned businesses, black activists, and activities of the black community. This newspaper is page two of a four-page paper, and includes articles on topics such as black soldiers in the war, campaign against lynching, and copies of a correspondence between Adams and W.E.B. DuBois.
