John Ireland,  who was born in Ireland and immigrated to Minnesota in the 1850s, had been a priest for only a year when he joined the Fifth Minnesota as its chaplain in 1862. He was discharged due to poor health in 1863. Ireland eventually became the first Archbishop of Minneapolis and St. Paul, and was influential in the Catholic Church, in politics, and in social movements until his death in 1918.
