Carrie Chapman Catt, President of the National American Woman Suffrage Association, called for the creation of the League of Women Voters a few months before the 19th amendment passed. The League's purpose, as Catt described it, was to "finish the fight" and "united all existing organizations of women who believe in its principles." From 1920 to the present, the League has worked to help women and men become more active participants in government. Voting has been a particular emphasis of the League; members work to register voters and encourage voting at all levels of government.
