The Boy Scouts of America was a relatively new organization when the war started. Incorporated in 1910, and granted a federal charter by President Wilson in 1916, the Boy Scouts became very active in the war efforts at home. Scouts were enlisted to run messages, watch the coasts, and keep an eye out for men who didn't report for duty. They collected the pits of fruits, to be used as charcoal in gas masks overseas.

The Boys Scouts played a crucial role in helping to raise money for the American war effort. The organization sold more than $352 million in bonds, and more than $101 million in War Saving Stamps.
