Canteen workers at St. Paul Red Cross

Red Cross chapters were segregated during World War I. African American women formed auxiliary chapters and contributed to the war effort by rolling bandages, making surgical dressings, and nursing. A very small number of black women served with the Red Cross overseas, so most of the community's involvement took place at home.

This photograph shows members of the Rachel E. Harris Red Cross Auxiliary from St. Paul. The chapter was composed of about 20 women.
