Child's printed cotton dress

A toddler girl wore this, her first short dress, during the Civil War. The wearer, Genevieve Ives, was born in New York in 1861. She later moved west, and a few years after her first husband died, she married Peter Schwarg in Dodge Center, Minnesota. She taught at Dodge Center High School, was president of the library board, and was vice president of the Minnesota Woman Suffrage Association. Tracking Genevieve in the census records demonstrates the challenge of handwritten census forms. She appears with three different names in three different years: Julia, Jennie, and Gallen.
