Civil War-era United States flag
Women showed their patriotism by organizing on behalf of regiments and sewing flags for the men to carry into battle. The women of Saint Anthony made this flag of pieced silk and gold painted stars. The one large star in the center represents Minnesota, and the stars circling it stand for the other 33 states. The First Minnesota Volunteer Infantry Regiment marched all the way from Fort Snelling to St. Anthony, around 10 miles, just to be presented with the flag.
