Company D, 1st Minnesota, Nicollet Avenue

This photograph of Company D of the First Minnesota was taken on May 21, 1861 on Nicollet Avenue in Minneapolis. Hundreds of men responded to President Lincoln's call for three-month volunteers in April, but when the term of enlistment was extended to three years, many volunteers withdrew. Company D, made up of Minneapolis men, shrank to 36 men. This photo of Company D was taken on the day of a First Minnesota picnic on Nicollet Island, as officers scrambled to recruit more soldiers. Lieutenant Dewitt Smith stands in the foreground. Less than half of the men pictured would survive the war.
