German immigrants formed the Deutscher Krieger Verein (German Veterans' Society) group in Minneapolis in the 1870s, one of many such groups around the state and country. To belong to the group, members must have served in the Franco-Prussian war (1870-1871) or an earlier German war. Similar groups also formed in St. Paul, Stillwater, and Fulda. It was a typical fraternal organization which had many social functions, including parades to the Lutheran church, picnics, dinners, dances, and memorial services. In 1914, the Deutscher Krieger Verein of Minneapolis spoke out against a Prohibition amendment.  The groups were disbanded in 1916 due to anti-German sentiments during World War I. This Deutscher Krieger Verein flag was dedicated in St. Petri Lutheran Church, Minneapolis, a church built to serve German immigrants in 1894.
