Swedish immigrant Hans Mattson settled in Goodhue County in 1853. He raised a company of Scandinavians to fight for the Union in the Civil War and served as an officer in the Third Minnesota. After the war, Mattson worked to promote immigration to Minnesota and became the first Swede elected to a Minnesota office, serving as Secretary of State.
