Many World War I propaganda posters were so powerful because they were so simple. This poster, encouraging women to work for the Red Cross, claims that good Red Cross workers are essential to keeping soldiers alive. Most Red Cross posters featured white women. Segregation was very much alive in the United States at the time, and that was reflected in who organizations were trying to recruit and who they accepted. Only a very few black women served overseas.
