Joseph Dunn

Joseph Dunn emigrated to Minnesota from Canada with his family in 1857. They lived in Mower County, near the Iowa border. In 1864, Joseph mustered in with the 11th Minnesota, the last regiment to be raised by the state during the Civil War. The 11th served mainly in Tennessee, protecting the railroads from Confederate guerillas so Union troops and supplies could get through. After the war, Dunn lived alternately in Dakota Territory, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. He and his wife Eva had eight children, three of whom died in infancy. At some point, someone (possibly the donor, Mrs. E.R. Larson) wrote details about Dunn on the cardboard photo frame. These notes help answer questions about the soldier pictured, but also raise new questions this young immigrant who served in the war, and also about the woman who donated the image.
