Campaigning for president looked very different during the Civil War than it does today. But similar to the present, Americans sought to show their support for their candidate in visual ways. Campaign buttons or badges have been in use since the election of George Washington. Abraham Lincoln's presidential campaign in 1860 was the first to use a candidate's image on a button. At this time, people made their own buttons or badges; mass-produced buttons were not made until 1896. This is also a wonderful source because of the writing on the front and back. The donor, Carrie Staples, may have received the badge from her parents, who settled in Minnesota just before the Civil War. It appears that the badge was worn by another relative: Miss Rosilla Rogers.
