Minnesota regiments served with distinction at the Battle of Gettysburg (July 1-3, 1863) and the Battle of Vicksburg (May 18-July 4, 1863). These two battles were crucial Union victories. The First Minnesota fought at Gettysburg, and the Third, Fourth and Fifth regiments were involved at Vicksburg.
