Lutiant LuVoy letter

Lutiant LuVoye wrote to her friend Louise from Washington, D.C., where she was working as a nurse toward the end of the war. Lutiant was Ojibwe, and grew up in northern Minnesota, near Red Lake and on the White Earth reservation. In fall 1918, she had recently graduated from the Haskell Indian Boarding School in Kansas. Her letter is rich with detail about the influenza epidemic and wartime Washington.

This letter is in the collections of the National Archives.
