This picture shows Field and Staff Officers of the First Minnesota standing outside of the Commandant's Quarters at Fort Snelling. The First Minnesota mustered on April 29 1861 at Fort Snelling. When the war began, Fort Snelling was opened up as a base for soldiers where they learned drills and other basics before going off into duty. The First Minnesota was the first regiment from any state offered up to fight for the Union.-AH
