People's Bank currency sheet
Before the Civil War, there was no National Bank. Instead, states had their own banking systems that printed their own money. This currency sheet -- which includes $1, $2, $3 and $5 notes -- was printed for the People's Bank of St. Peter. In 1859, the Minnesota-based People's Bank printed 7,000 of these currency sheets. Four years later, the U.S. government passed the National Banking Act. National currency soon replaced state currency.
