This image shows sawyers working in one of Minnesota's pineries, or a grove of pine trees. During the early 1860s, most of the nation's lumber came from states farther east. After the Civil War, the forests on the east coast were logged out, and even Michigan and Wisconsin were being cleared of their valuable forests. Logging companies started to look westward, toward Minnesota's sweeping pineries. In the late 19th century, Minnesota entered into a logging boom.
