This portable alcohol burner was intended to heat surgical instruments in order to cauterize wounds. The flame flickered in the circle, and the instrument rested on the brass stand, two inches above the fire. Surgeons cauterized wounds, or sealed tissue, to stop bleeding or close blood vessels. This particular burner, however, was used by Captain William Moore Leyde as a stove or lantern.
