RMS Lusitania sailor's cap tally
On May 1, 1915, the British passenger ship RMS Lusitania set sail from New York, headed for Liverpool, England. The ship carried mostly British and Canadian passengers, but there were also 128 Americans on board. The boat also carried ammunition and other supplies to help the British war effort. The ship was torpedoed by a German U-boat on May 7, 1915 and sank in only 18 minutes. Of the almost 2,000 people on board, 1,198 died when the ship sank.
