This field medical kit contains four bottles; three are marked "quinine", "camphor", "Dover's Powders", and the fourth is blank. Quinine was an extremely important drug for soldiers fighting in the South. It eased symptoms of several tropical diseases that Union troops were exposed to as they traveled into the Confederacy. Camphor provided a calming effect and could be used to ease pain or nervousness in patients. Dover's Powder was opium-based and used for general pain relief as well.
