Soldier's tin skillet

Matthias Schlinker's haversack included this tin skillet, which he may have used to cook over a campfire. Civil War soldiers' daily rations included items like salt beef, hardtack, beans, rice, and molasses. Coffee was an important part of soldiers' meals, too. They drank it constantly, using whatever water was available. Confederate soldiers didn't have access to coffee beans due to blockades, so they made do with brewing ground chicory or sweet potatoes.
