When the 18th amendment passed in 1919, the alcohol industry faced a difficult choice: produce something different, or close their businesses. The Jacob Schmidt Brewing Company in St. Paul was one of a few brewers who chose to make new products, such as non-alcoholic malt beverages. The brewery survived Prohibition and continued in business until 1955.

The owners of the Jacob Schmidt Brewery at this time were brothers Adolf and Otto Bremer. Otto Bremer is famous for starting Bremer Banks, and Adolf's son Edward became famous when he was kidnapped in 1934 by the infamous Barker-Karpis gang.
