Steel flechette

Steel flechettes are small, thin darts that were dropped from planes into trenches. A flechette quickly gathered speed as it fell to the ground, like a bullet, and its sharp point could pierce helmets and bodies of soldiers below. Flechettes caused terrible injuries and death, but the odds of hitting a soldier with one was not very good. By the middle of the war, flechettes were not used very often.

This flechette was collected by Ezra Curry when he was serving in France.
