U.S. Army infantry uniform cap

Forage hats like this one were given to every soldier, both Union and Confederate. Although blue is often associated with the Union army and gray with the Confederate army, not all units wore the color of their side. Some Northern units wore gray or even bright red, while Southern units wore many different shades as well. Stonewall Jackson, the famous Confederate general, prefered a dark blue kepi instead of Confederate gray.
