Before the Civil War, Major General Christopher Columbus Andrews was a lawyer, writer, and abolitionist. Andrews was a captain in the war, where he had a horse shot underneath him. While he was imprisoned in Georgia, he wrote a book called Hints to Company Commanders. After the war, he became Minister of the United States to Sweden and Norway, and was an advocate for responsible forestry practices. One of the buttons on his coat has been replaced with a Minnesota State Seal Button.
