U.S. Army model 1864 infantry cartridge box

Colonel William Mann invented this cartridge box in 1864. Previously, soldiers had difficulty carrying necessary amounts of ammunition. Cartridge boxes and straps hurt their waists, chests, and sides. Mann changed the placement of the straps to evenly distribute weight, and extended the box so it could hold more bullets. Soldiers found that it was easier to load and fire with this new design.
