Lieutenant George Calladine of the 65th Illinois Volunteer Infantry wore this mounted infantry officer's wool flannel jacket while standing honor guard over President Lincoln's coffin in 1865. This would have been a great honor for Calladine, who had started his own company in the Union army by selling his livestock at the beginning of the war. Calladine, an immigrant from England, built a house on Nicollet Island and lived there until his death in 1893.
