US Army steel helmet
St. Paul resident Norman Claussen wore this steel helmet when he served as part of the Mexican Border Patrol in 1916, and in France in 1917. Steel helmets became very common during World War I because of close combat, trench warfare, and destructive new weapons. The French, British and Germans all had different designs for their steel helmets. Americans generally used the British design.
