Norman Claussen earned this medal for his service on the Mexican Border Patrol. The Mexican Border Service Medal was awarded to National Guard or US Army soldiers who served on the border between January 1916 and April 1917. The award was first created in July 1918, so Claussen probably received this medal just a few months before he died of influenza.
