This is a Navy jacket worn by Joseph S. Bennett. The U.S. Navy became very important during the war, growing by 600%. Ships were a key part of the Union's strategy of cutting off Southern supplies that were shipped in from ports or on riverboats, known as the "Anaconda Plan". The first battle between two ironclad ships, and the first successful submarine attack, both happened during the war. It was mainly the efforts of the Navy that led to the capture of New Orleans, the largest Southern city.
