Women were a powerful influence on the temperance movement in the United States. Although they couldn't vote, they were very involved in temperance organizations and in promoting the benefits of Prohibition on society. The Women's Christian Temperance Union was a nationwide organization that had state branches, including in Minnesota. These women, from Madison, Minnesota in Lac Qui Parle County, carried signs and wore all white -- as a sign of purity -- to protest for prohibition of alcohol.

The 18th amendment to the US Constitution was passed in 1919, banning the manufacture, sale and transportation of alcohol.
