Biography
Alice A. Shepard was born in 1859 in Dartford, Green Lake County, Wisconsin. Her parents were Richard and Rowena Charity (Stratton) Shepard. Alice attended normal school at Mankato, graduating in 1875, and taught school for five years. Alice Shepard met John Lind while she

was teaching in New Ulm, and the couple married in 1879. The Linds had four children.

As first lady, Alice accompanied her husband to official functions, such as a "Frederick Douglass Day" celebration produced by the American Law Protective League of Minnesota in February 1899. Alice was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Women's Club, and the Fine Arts Society. She worked for prohibition, and promoted the penny lunch in public schools to feed hungry children of the poor.

John Lind died on September 18, 1930. Alice Lind died in 1942. Both are buried in Lakewood Cemetery in Minneapolis.
