Mary Angelina "Lena" Morrill was born near Augusta, Maine in 1835, a member of the very large extended Morrill family of Maine. Horace Austin

studied law in the Augusta law office of Lot Myrick Morrill, future U.S. senator and governor of Maine, and Lena's second cousin.

Horace Austin moved to St. Peter, Minnesota in 1856. He and Lena were married in 1859 in Manchester, Maine. The couple had six children. Author James H. Baker described the family as "of high intellectuality, great and varied talents, and marked with individuality and force of character."

Horace Austin became governor of Minnesota in 1870, and served two terms.

Lena Austin died of complications from surgery on October 30, 1910 in St. Paul, Minnesota. She is buried at Oakland Cemetery in St. Paul with her husband, who passed away in 1905.
