About the Directory of Minnesota Photographers
The directory provides biographical and historical information about commercial photographers and photographic studios. The most complete data is about 19th and early 20th century photographers (1850-1920s). The information includes names, demographics (such as birth date, death date, sex and ethnicity), place dates associated with specific locations where photographers worked, decades worked in Minnesota, business names, and information about business predecessors and successors.
The directory will help answer questions about photographers who worked in the state and the images they created. Data may help date photographs, distinguish names of photographers, and associate photographers with specific places. For example, if you have a family photograph stamped with a Minnesota photographer’s name, the directory may help you pinpoint the photograph’s location and date.
Not every entry about a photographer or photography business has complete information because original documents usually did not contain all the possible data about a photographer or business. Sometimes all we know is the last name of a photographer, or the name of a business.
