The Weather

St. Anthony Falls, December 16, 1865
Minnesotans have been recording the weather since October 1819, when the surgeon at Fort Snelling began taking readings every morning, afternoon, and evening. Each reading included the temperature; a characterization of the weather, such as "clear" or "cloudy"; the wind direction; and remarks on the force of the winds, intensity of the precipitation, or other interesting weather observations.

When white settlers arrived in Minnesota, the weather quickly became a popular topic for letters, diaries, and newspaper reports.
