Meeting the People
In 1849 most of the inhabitants of Minnesota Territory were Indians, but the first federal census, taken in 1850, mainly counted white settlers. The census tells much about the people who made their homes on the frontier. A quill-decorated leather coat offers a glimpse into the lives of the Territory's Indian and mixed-blood people.
