Battle Flags of Minnesota.

About the Battle Flags of Minnesota

In 2008 the Minnesota Historical Society was awarded a Save America's Treasure grant, a partnership of the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the National Park Service, Department of the Interior, and a matching appropriation from the Minnesota state legislature. The Minnesota Historical Society began a major effort to conserve a collection of 21 authentic battle flags representing Minnesota regiments in the Civil, U.S.-Dakota, Spanish-American and Philippine-American Wars. Additional funding has been provided by the Tawani Foundation for the conservation of the remaining 37 flags in the Society's collections.

This site presents historical background, descriptions and images for each flag conserved under the auspices of this program. It includes supporting information about the conservation process and highlights the flags currently on view in the Minnesota State Capitol rotunda.
