The interviews were conducted in the 1980s for the Jewish Community Relations Council, Anti-Defamation League of Minnesota and the Dakotas Holocaust Oral History Taping Project. Some narrators belonged to the first Allied forces to reach concentration camps at the end of World War II; the other narrators saw camps within days of their liberation.

The Jewish Community Relations Council donated the recordings and transcripts to the Minnesota Historical Society in 1996.
